Tivo - Seven’s attempt to force conformity

Posted by PhilzGr8 on July 15, 2008

I read on ITWire the other day about Seven’s Tivo venture. What a joke. Apparently the Tivo natively allows 30 second skipping which the networks have decided is taboo for any PVR using the freely distributed EPG. From my reading of it these boxes have had this functionality disabled but you do have to wonder how long it will be before somebody comes up with a hack. Apparently the Tivo has already been hacked in the US so there’s nothing to stop it happening here too. When will they learn that such things are just a waste of time.

Mind you, as a Media Centre owner I wouldn’t touch a Tivo with a 40 foot barge pole with it’s limitations… No ripped music library, no picture library, no ability to swap content with your PC or iPod etc. only 160Gb of HDD space which will allow you only 20-30 hours of HD content and apparently they will be releasing it without any capability to transfer to external hard drive short of a PAID firmware update. To add insult to injury, can you believe they will actually display advertisements while you fast forward?

Nope… no Tivo for me. I don’t plan to be told by Seven or any other network which PVR I can use.

It’s very very difficult to enable the 30 second skip functionality on the TiVo. Apparently you have to:

    1 Play a TiVo recording
2 On your remote hit Select, Play, Select, 3, 0, Select

The SPS30S hack has been disabled on Australian TiVos, I’m sorry to say.
Don’t bother trying it, it won’t work.

And don’t hold your breath waiting for the Aussie TiVo to be hacked either, it’s a lot more difficult than the early Series 1 TiVos.

    Cheers

Why would I want a Tivo?
I use MediaPortal where I have total control over everything such as diskspace (1 TB so far), tuners (3 x HD), ripped movies & music, weather, automatic ad removal from recordings, streaming radio, streaming TV to all PCs in the house, games and even Skype (Yes, I can ring my TV from my mobile using VOIP!).
I love what technology offers, not what the FTA stations ‘almost’ offers us.
